Spin the Windrose gets nominated for the Liebster Award!

I’m very excited to say that Spin the Windrose has been nominated for its first award – the Liebster Award! Many thanks to The Business Traveler’s Wife for the nomination.

Liebster is a German word meaning favourite, sweetheart, beloved and darling, so the Liebster Award is a nomination of your favourite blogs (in particular new blogs). Put simply, how it works is that the nominated blogger chooses ten other blogs they think should be nominated for the Liebster Award. They have to answer the questions asked by the previous nominee, as well as asking new ones to their own nominees. Through participating in this long internet chain letter, the Liebster Award encourages networking between bloggers and introduces readers to new blogs that you may or may not know about yet!

Spin the Windrose is only about 18 months old so I’m really thrilled to receive a nomination for the Liebster Award… Out of all the millions of blogs on the Internet, mine was picked! I know it’s not a huge award (not like being recognised by Lonely Planet or National Geographic — I wish!) but still, it’s something! I’m always surprised when I receive comments or feedback from people I don’t know, because I often think the only people who read my blog are James (because I make him) and my mum. Considering I write this blog alongside working full time I’m pretty chuffed to be a Liebster Aard nominee!

Note: full rules can be found here

If you have been nominated for The Liebster Award and you choose to accept it, write a blog post in which you:

  1. Thank the person who nominated you for the Liebster Award & post a link to their blog on your blog.
  2. Display the award on your blog.
  3. Write 150-300 words about your favourite blog.
  4. Answer your nominator’s questions and create 11 questions for your own nominees to answer.
  5. Nominate 5 – 11 blogs that you feel deserve the award, who have a less than 200 followers.
  6. List these rules in your post.
  7. Inform the bloggers you’ve nominated them for the Liebster Award and provide a link to your post.

My favourite blog(s):

It’s actually really hard to pick just one blog. I only read a handful of blogs on a regular basis; I like to read loads of different posts from a whole heap of different writers (I love Pinterest and Bloglovin’ for that reason!) A couple that stick out for me as blogs I go back to again and again are the blogging queens Liz (of Young Adventuress), who inspired me to visit New Zealand, and Kate (of Adventurous Kate) who reminds me that even if me and James weren’t together, I could still travel the world all by myself.

My responses to the Business Traveler’s Wife’s questions:

1. Tell me about you.

Well, this is… open… You can read a bit about me here, but here’s some fun(?) facts.

Lake Rotoiti, Nelson Lakes National Park, New Zealand

2. What’s your blog about?

Spin the Windrose is about affordable, realistic travel. I want to encourage other young people like me to travel, be it to the next town or to the other side of the world. I want to make others realise it’s possible to travel. The content on Spin the Windrose changes and will continue to change as I visit new places, but mostly Spin the Windrose is my place to share my favourite things to do, places to see, foods to try, opinions etc on new places I visit.

I like to think that I’m able to help others with their travels through my work on Spin the Windrose, because I often write the posts that I would want to read myself or that I haven’t yet been able to find online. My post ‘How to save money on a Working Holiday Visa in Auckland‘ is my most popular by far and I hope it provides useful and honest advice to other backpackers working and travelling in New Zealand.

3. What do you love about blogging?

I love that through the blogging world you can read real experiences from others; you have a free space to honestly express yourself. Social media is often heavily edited, with too much focus (in my opinion) on how you or your life is portrayed. I like that the blogging world is often more honest, more REAL. Blogs are my favourite way to research a new destination as they are often stories as well as advice/useful info.

4. What is one goal you have for your blog in 2016?

To own it. Spin the Windrose is currently owned by WordPress, even though I have a .com URL. This year (well, as soon as I’m reunited with my MacBook) I’m going to self-host. Wouldn’t anyone love to get paid to travel or be a travel blogger for a living? I sure would, but I will continue to write this blog even if I never make a penny from it. Owning my website is an important step for me towards achieving my goals.
5. If you could spend a day anywhere in the world, where would it be?

This is TOUGH. If I ever visit somewhere new I would want to spend more than just a day there, because part of the fun is beginning to get accustomed to a place and to have the time to make the most of your surroundings. So that leaves me with places I’ve been to before. I’d like to return to Pau in France, where I spent my year abroad, though I reckon it’d be pretty nostalgic. I’d also like to go back to Naples in Italy for the same reason. But again I would want more than just a day there.

In that case, I pick home. Every so often I get a little down about being so far away from friends and family. There’s nothing better than taking the dogs (now gone, poor Mol) for a run at Ferry Meadows or Bourne Woods, then coming home to a pot of tea and some digestive biscuits and spending the evening snuggled up on the sofa watching a U-rated film. I love those days.

6. What is the most memorable thing you’ve done during a trip and why?

I’m not into adrenaline-fuelled adventures like skydiving or bungee-jumping, so my memorable moments are probably a bit different from what people would normally write here. Also I cannot pick just one, so here’s three (and some more here):

7. What is the best food you have ever eaten and where?

The food in India was incredible, from the thalis (3 types of curry + rice + daal + roti + poppadom + sweet) to the samosas you can hop off the train and buy for 10 rupees each. The street food in Bangkok was delicious, and these vegan pancakes at Speedo’s café in Sydney were pretty good too.

8. Where is the best place that you have ever been and why?

Again, how do I choose?! I would probably pick New Zealand, simply because it’s such a diverse country – with steaming geothermal areas, pristine, untouched beaches, dense rainforests and towering mountains. NZ has it all.

9. What’s on top of your bucketlist?

I’d love to go to Easter Island and Yosemite National Park. I want to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef and see the Northern (or Southern) Lights. I want to see the temples in Bagan, Myanmar and take a boat in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. I want to volunteer. I want to hike the Inca Trail and see the glaciers in South America. I want to teach abroad again and perhaps learn another language (a fourth!) There’s too much to do and so much to learn and I don’t know where to begin!

10. If you could be on a talk show or reality show, which one would you choose and why?

I don’t watch a lot of TV so I don’t actually know a lot of shows. Maybe I’m a Celebrity, because I like the bush and Ant and Dec.

11. Where is your next big vacation?

Aside from the one I’m currently on here in New Zealand, I’ll be taking a short trip to Asia in June en route home to the UK, and popping to Spain to see my sister. Then I’m returning to NZ where I’ll be working/saving until my job contract finishes in December, but our plans for next year are still in the making… South America, Asia, Eastern Europe… There’s a long list of possibilities!
